# Untitled Second [Bomp!] $15.98 The Telescopes began as a run-of-the-mill British shoegazer band fully under the thrall of noise and My Bloody Valentine, perhaps a little angrier than most of that ilk but pretty unmemorable. At some point, however, they discovered subtlety and songcraft. They traded in most of their noise pedals for some that make the guitars go all spacy and phased-out. They also wrote a batch of songs with melodies and hooks reminiscent of Love or The Notorious Byrd Brothers-era Byrds. The songs on The Telescopes are built on acoustic guitars, then the aforementioned tricked-out electric guitars are laid on top and garnished with bongos, organs, pianos, and all sorts of classic instruments. Stephen Lawrie’s vocals are restrained and semi-emotional and female backing vocals add a touch of sweetness that might otherwise be missing from the record, as the overall atmosphere is very moody and introspective. A large chunk of the credit should be given to producer Guy Fixsen, who also helmed some great records with Moose and Rollerskate Skinny and was a member of Laika. Sadly, the Telescopes split soon after this album came out, but the classic sound they came up with here lives on in bands like Mojave 3 and the Verve. [In 2008 Bomp! reissued the album under the title # Untitled Second, something Rev-Ola had done in 2004. That previous edition included two bonus tracks ("Dnaanb" and "Tornado") and a new cover. The Bomp! version keeps the same cover but adds three different bonus tracks: the EP version of "High on Fire," a sitar-led version of "The Sleepwalk" and non-LP track "Sunspray". #1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits $18.98 The title is self-explanatory: guitarist Chuck Loeb has scored no less than a dozen number one hits on radio charts for smooth jazz. He’s also played on literally hundreds of records, making him the Tommy Tedesco of the genre. None of that matters very much to his fans, and this collection is clearly assembled for them. While fans of smooth jazz (and what is in the 21st century now called “contemporary jazz”) will have enjoyed Loeb’s music and may even be familiar with it, it’s not so much the individual tracks that matter as the consistent sound and vibe. Early on, Loeb embraced the feel of smooth jazz and became one of its great ambassadors, displaying a knack for writing and producing music custom-tailored to the radio format that was so successful in the 1980s and 1990s (and continues in mutated form in the 2000s). His name has become synonymous with the genre, and the most memorable of his hits have their own timeless quality: “Blue Kiss,” “Sarao,” “Just Us,” and of course, “The Music Inside.” Other tracks will be not be especially well known by name but are easily identifiable by sound, including “Tropical,” “High Five,”and “Cruzin’ South.” The slippery, silky backbeat funk Loeb employs as a canvas in his tunes comes across as immediately welcoming and accessible; his guitar lines are always fluid; and his soloing is cut into short, tight pockets. Many of his collaborators are well known in the world of jazz at large as well: John Pattitucci, Jason Miles, Jim Beard, Will Lee, and Nestor Torres are all here, as well as many more. ‘Great Nations Still Enchained $143 Political cartoons are a valuable, though often neglected, source of historical information and understanding. In Great Nations Still Enchained, Roy Douglas uses these cartoons as a lens through which to examine the examine the political and social arenas of Europe, and the events which changes the landscape. Douglas includes cartoons from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Russia, the major powers of the day. These drawings illustrate how those people living in the midst of the events discussed perceived and interpreted them, acting as a barometer of public opinion, and reflecting their assumptions and ideas. As the cartoons are taken from various countries, they display how different, and often conflicting national attitudes developed. The period examined here, between 1878 and 1914, holds a particular significance in European history: 1878 marked the Congress of Berlin, which removed (or postponed) the very real risk of war between some of the Great Powers’, and was the last effective assertion of the Concert of Europe. After this time, the Powers drifted increasingly into smaller, limited alliances, which, among other factors, played a large part in the genesis of the First World War. Douglas has brought his gift for concise, clear explanation to this period, as has in his previous books Between the Wars 1919-1935 and The World War: 1939-1945. His work has brought currency and vitality to events which can often be lost in actual accounts. It should be of interest to any reader in European history and political science. |
